Franciscan Monastery

Kezdi chair Estelnic DJ114 163, Estelnic

Its founder was Mózes Nagy, a parish priest from Ghelinta, who also founded the school in Estelnic. In the upper part of the town of Estelnic, there has been a chapel dedicated to the martyr Saint George since ancient times. Mózes Mózes Mellé bought a plot of land and built a small wooden house at his own expense. Its first resident was Ferenc P. Pálfi in 1676. Later, during the time of Imre P. Dóczi, the first wooden monastery was built, which was completed in 1690.

The church next to the monastery was built between 1710 and 1729 using the elements of the old chapel of St. George, and probably became the sanctuary of the church. After that, the monastery was also rebuilt from stone and brick, when it took its final form. The work was completed in 1750. The monastery of Estelnic was a cultural center. It had a high school and boarding house of approx. for a century, where neighborhood children were educated and placed.

Here was the first permanent theater in the former "Haromsec", where students performed plays (school dramas). The monastery burned together with the church on December 23, 1921. Everything – the valuable library and the numerous manuscripts – fell prey to the flames. Only the eastern part of the former square monastery was rebuilt. The church, whose walls were still standing, was demolished, and in the 1930s, the tower as well.

The only thing that reminds me of the old monastery is the double sacristy, which was preserved in its original form, which was the oldest part of the monastery. It was built around 1690 and today houses the dining room and kitchen. The ornate 18th-century vestry cabinet and two carved beams were saved from the fire. The north wall of the church still stands as a fence.
