Haszmann Pál Museum

Kezdi chair Cernat Alsócsernáton (Cernat), 330-as szám Kovászna megye (jud. Covasna), Románia

In the last three decades, the settlement has received a considerable fame due to the regional museum, which was established in the former Damokos Gyula mansion in 1973. The founder of the institution belonging to the National Szekler Museum was educator Haszmann Pál (1902-1977), who, beside his activity of teaching and educating children, engaged himself in exploration of local history, and therefore he had diligently collected different memories of the surroundings of the place where he used to live and work. His spiritual and material legacy has been taken over and preserved by his sons. Since 1999 the museum has born the name of his founder.

The most valuable element of the garden is the Skanzen, presenting a group of places of dwelling and several famous Szekler gates dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, which were preserved thanks to the inhabitants of Kézdiszék, a collection of tombstones and wooden carved monuments as well as the exhibition of agricultural equipment that is unique in Transylvania.

In the basement of the mansion visitors can have access to an ethnographic exhibition that displays several aspects of local history. A valuable part of this exhibition is the one presenting several ovens made of cast iron. This museum is not only the thesaurus of our valuable ethnographic legacy but also the significant spiritual center of Kézdiszék. Camping groups continuously come and leave this place from spring till autumn. Due to workshops that engage participants into the art of woodcarving and furniture painting (being led by the Haszmann brothers), many young people have become adepts and followers of these traditions. This workshop is the place where lots of headstones and gates of the region are made.
